Streaming Gem for Cheapos, 2010-03-08
Although I would love to have the latest and greatest in entertainment technology, I am constantly confronted with the fact that.....well.....I can't afford it. I have not been able to convince myself to take the plunge and get the all-new HDTVs when my old ones work perfectly well. Based on this fact, the Roku player was a relatively inexpensive way for us to be able to watch Netflix streaming content on our regular TV. The setup was very easy, and we rarely have any problems with our network connection (we are connected wirelessly using a 802.11n connection). We love it!
Good player but not Great, 2010-03-06
Good player for Netflix and Pandora but the other channels aren't worth much. Possibly down the road but for now really not worth much at all. Now for the ratings.
Picture: Good on HD.. I'd give it a 720 pic on most but really the HD just brings it up to a good standard def pic but in "true" format. The standard def picture on some movies is better than PC quality but most are just that.
Wireless: Good when 20ft away but I cannot connect to my bedroom that is 30ft away. Either a problem with the internal antenna in the Roku or with my Netgear WNR834B vs. router. Guessing the antenna since my other wireless devices have no issue connecting beyond a 20ft range.
Power: Should I say lack of? No power button? What? Who designs something with no power button. I have to leave this thing on and it runs warm! If I disconnect it I have to turn my Broadcast back on and enable my Pin to get this thing to connect again. Guessing they ran into this issue with the beta models they had a power button on so what did they do? Ah... no power button. Riot. I assume if you were wired in this wouldn't be an issue but I don't have the luxury of that option.
USB: No use at this point. I would say I paid $30 extra for nothing at this point. Maybe downt he road but at that point won't this box just be that... a box? This technology is being built into just about everything now. Save yourself $30 bucks and just get the HD version.
Still... I would have to say after all this it is worth it. Gets the job done and even though it doesn't have a power button I can still add to my Harmony remote for control.

Bought it from Amazon, took it out of the box and was up and running inside of 5 minutes and I am not a technical person.
Roku HD-XR Player, 2010-03-03
Had a problem with customer service/ROKU technical support in getting the player to work in a wireless environment. After attempting several changes to the wireless router settings and being unable to access [...], third/final step, in the process, I called and talked to 3 different ROKU technical support representatives. First person was helpful but could not provide a solution to the correction of the problem - he would escalate problem to higher level. The changes in the wireless router he suggested caused my router to no longer function with my other wireless devices, so I had to deinstall/reinstall router software, etc. So I tried again but was unsuccessful. Called ROKU technical support again the next day and the person that answered, first question was had I changed the cable (had already told him I had ordered a new cable from Amazon.com and yes, I had tried another HDMI cable and composite cables), he then asked me if I had download firmware updates from [...] (after I told him I could not access [...] using the Roku player), told him no and was wondering how one does that when I was unable to use the player and access the web site), he made couple of more off the wall comments, at which time I asked to speak to a supervisor. After waiting about 5 minutes on hold, the supervisor starting working with me and we worked about 45 minutes with no positive results - must point out the supervisor made a great effort to fix the problem. She told me that she would do the same as the first person had said the previous day- escalate the problem to a higher technical level. I also sent an e-mail to the router manufacturer and got a reply soon thereafter to call (gave me a name and telephone number with extension) for assistance. Still had not heard from ROKU higher level technical assistance. But, I tried again to fix the problem and apparently, the ROKU player will only work with my D-Link Dir 628 router in the 802.11g setting, and I changed the channel settings. With these two changes, everything clicked, and the player has worked fine since then.
Actually, I would definitely recommend the ROKU player, but there are other players available,
and DVD wireless players which will perform the same function. But the ROKU player is a good buy in my opinion.
roku ROCKS!, 2010-03-03
Works awesome! I've upgraded my wireless network to wireless n, and the roku streams perfectly. there used to be some hiccups before with my old wireless g (but it was also a little outdated), but with the new wireless n, everything just WORKS. The extra channels that come with the roku service just sweeten the deal more.
